At Downtown Bridal, our experienced team is ready to guide you through the alteration process to make sure everything runs smoothly and as stress-free as possible.

Our seamstress team works together on every aspect from your first fitting to the last, trimming and sewing to the final steam and press, ensuring that your gown is picture-perfect.

Benefits of On-site Alterations

  • upmost convenience after finding your gown
  • seamstress advice on alterations before you even purchase your wedding dress
  • avoid unnecessary tailoring if you’re ordering a gown in a different size than off-the-rack
  • ability to bring your shoes and undergarments so proper adjustments can be evaluated in store at every fitting

How much do dress Alterations cost?

Wedding dress alterations typically require budgeting at least $500 for most adjustments, with average costs ranging between $400 and $650.

At Downtown Bridal, we strive to be competitively priced, and our goal is to ensure you only pay for the garment alterations you truly need.

***Please note that wedding dress alterations are not included in the cost of your dress.***

Navigating Fluctuating Body Size

Body size fluctuation is NORMAL and happens due to a variety of factors. When ordering your dress, discuss any concerns with your fit specialist.
We strongly advise against ordering a size down to “force” yourself to lose weight — our priority is to ensure you feel confident in your body and gown.

Our wedding dress alterations experts will guide you through the process with expertise and will schedule your bridal gown fittings on month markers from the wedding date based on your menstrual cycle to ensure best fit through normal monthly fluctuations.

What to Bring to your Fitting

Detailed up close shot of shoes and dress.

Shoes

The height of your heels affects not only a dress’s hemline but also the bodice and bustle design.

Our seamstress will discuss your wedding venue with you and offer suggestions as to what would be the best hem length.

If you plan to change shoes for the reception, consider any height difference. Our brides often opt to split the difference!

Undergarments

Bring any undergarments and shapewear you plan to wear with your wedding dress. These items play a huge role in overall fit, depending how the gown is constructed.

If you are concerned about finding the right size and type of shapewear or garments, ask one of our staff members for recommendations.

***Basic undergarments are required for all appointments.***

Accessories

Add any accessories including jewelry, hairpieces, or veils on at the end of your fitting.

We suggest taking your veil and/or hairpiece to any hair trials so your stylist can determine best placement.

Afterwards, you can bring your veil back to your final fitting to be freshly steamed for your big day!

Important Things to Remember

Who to Bring with You

First fitting, it’s best to bring just one or two trusted individuals to avoid overwhelming opinions.

Final fitting, consider bringing someone who will be at the wedding that will assist with your bustle and dress on the big day.

ASK QUESTIONS!

If you have specific concerns or preferences, please express them as early on in the process as possible.

Use photo references or ask about the seemingly smallest details.

Your wedding should be filled with clarity, not concern. Ask away!

Wedding Dress Bustle

A wedding dress bustle is designed in alterations. Each dress bustle is custom-crafted to suit your dress and keep your train off the floor.

We provide a bustle map for reference, but recommend video recording the process during your last fitting.

Alterations Timeline

Brides: We recommend purchasing your dress 10 to 12 months before your wedding.
Mothers of the bride and groom: Alterations should be scheduled 6-8 weeks before the wedding.
Prom/Gala attendees: Plan to come in as soon as you have shoes. Your alterations timeline will depend on how full our cue of clients is.

  • We had the best experience with Katie for my future daughter in law’s wedding dress shopping experience! She was so pleasant and patient as she tired on the different gowns and was always ready with a suggestion on what alterations could be made to adjust the dress to her vision. She handled our group of 5 women with kindness and was a great to support to Kaitlyn. A great day! ❤️🤩🔥
